Projects
Middlesex University
Blakedown Sport & Play carried out extensive reconstruction works to the existing sand-filled pitch at the Middlesex University Hendon Campus. Works included a new 3G Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) for football and rugby. The high-spec 3G Touchdown 60 carpet was installed onto a shockpad - ensuring IRB22 playing capability. A second sand-dressed MUGA was built with a shockpad to accommodate cricket, tennis, netball & basketball. Five cricket bays with retractable netting were installed. Two further sand-dressed MUGA's were built. These allow for basketball, tennis, netball and 5-a-side. Heavy duty fencing was installed with recessed goal areas plus basketball hoop and back-boards. Finally a 60m traverse climbing wall was installed, with colour coded grips to allow for different levels of difficulty. This is the longest wall of its kind in the UK. All of the new areas needed a new drainage system installing, plus new stone and macadam layers. Fencing and floodlighting to all the MUGA's completed this large project.
Riverside Farnham
This was a challenging project, from the outset the site was a demanding one: - Overgrown marshland - At certain times of the year access was impossible. - River flood plain ? twice during the contract works had to be suspended due to flooding. - Old gas works, old foundations and buried waste were issues. - HV overhead cables the length of the site needed to be lowered. - Contaminated land - A remediation strategy was implemented with an appointed consultant. - Outfall area for illegal surrounding drainage - A number of "illegal" drains discharged into the site which had to be dealt with. Our brief was to reclaim the site, identify areas of contamination including tar and cyanide from the old gas works. We constructed a new pavilion building and 5 acrylic coated tennis courts, including floodlighting. In addition we: - Organised the lowering and re-routing of the HV overhead power cables - this took 18 months. - Designed & installed a new drainage scheme that did not affect the sites use as a flood water storage area - a design which had to meet Environment Agency criteria. - Site clearance, earthworks, form containment cells for the contamination, re-route footpaths & construct car park areas and access ways. - Arrange new power & water for the tennis club - On completion of the above ensure the site was set in a suitable landscape setting. The outcome of the project saw a contaminated, marshy waste land, previously an eyesore and dumping ground transformed into a local
Nelson & Colne College
Nelson & Colne College appointed Blakedown Sport & Play Limited to design and build their new 3G pitch via a competitive tender procedure carried out by property consultants Pearson Fraser. The brand new facility was to be built using the highest grade 3G surface and to comply with FIFA 1 star and IRB22 standards. The FIFA accredited Edel Future DS 60mm carpet, designed to replicate natural turf and to give a high-performance surface all year round, was chosen and laid onto a top-specification engineered base of stone, tarmac and 25mm in-situ shockpad. Playing lines for football a three cross play 5-a-side were in-laid into the surface, heavy duty twin-bar fencing and eight floodlights completed the scheme. In addition to the 3G pitch a new floodlit MUGA for tennis, netball & basketball was also constructed. College Principal, Amanda Melton "We are delighted with the new sports facilities which have been created for our students at the College. We already have an excellent reputation for producing elite sportsmen and woman and we are proud that we now have the facilities to match their abilities and ambitions." John Pearson, Director at Pearson Fraser added "I would like to Blakedown for the manner in which the project has been delivered; the service and work on site has been to the highest level and this is reflected in this fantastic facility. Would you please pass on our complements and thanks to all involved."
