"“It was crucial that the subsoil we selected satisfied the stringent requirements of the specification. British Sugar TOPSOIL’s SubSoil product has been perfect for this particular element of the Newhurst project as it is free-draining and easy to work with.”"
Work undertaken by British Sugar TOPSOIL:
The Newhurst Energy Recovery Facility near Shepshed, Leicestershire, which is currently under construction, is being developed by Biffa, Covanta and Green Investment Group who develop and operate recycling and Energy-from-Waste facilities in the UK and around the world. When completed in 2023, the facility will treat up to 350,000 tonnes of residual waste per year, generating up to 42 megawatts of low carbon energy – enough to power around 80,000 homes.
West London-based building and civil engineering company RMC McRail were sub-contracted to undertake the groundworks for the project by Byrne Bros, appointed by principal contractor Hitachi Zosen Inova.
RMC McRail selected British Sugar TOPSOIL’s BS8601:2013-compliant general purpose SubSoil product to line the site’s large attenuation pond. This pond manages storm water and surface water run off by capturing it and releasing it slowly back into the environment to prevent flooding.
1,000 tonnes of SubSoil was delivered to the Newhurst site in eight-wheeled tipper lorries. SubSoil has typically 86% sand content and is stringently tested to provide a safe, consistent and free-draining product that is ideal for groundwork operations.
