Robert Hughes Studio Ltd. is an award winning garden design company based in Knutsford, Cheshire. We are a small studio specialising in intricate and immersive landscapes for the high-end domestic and commercial clients in the property development market. Our highly detailed and considered approach is similar to that of an architect. We provide innovative ideas and bold composition. We combine beautiful modern and traditional materials with naturalistic and often minimalistic planting design, resulting in contemporary gardens that are recognised for their imagination, clever use of form and texture, balance of space and sensitivity to their environment. We work on a range of projects from small town gardens to large, modern country landscapes. Our network of meticulous, highly skilled and professional Landscape contractors are complimented by craftsmen, industry experts and reputable suppliers that we use to implement our vision and bring our designs to fruition.

Projects
Hankelow
The Dairy house garden design is a converted barn nestled in the beautiful rolling Cheshire countryside. The original garden functioned as both front and back garden with the house only having one aspect to the front elevation.
Using a dry stone wall and naturalistic planting, we divided the space to create a concealed driveway. This made for a more secluded garden perfect for relaxing and entertaining.
The real star of the show is the stunning views over the Cheshire hills. It was vital not to interrupt them but rather lead the eye out and integrate them with the manmade landscape. Using perspective and the perennial meadow the garden does this successfully by blurring the boundary and creating that connection.
Our clients wanted a space they could enjoy in all weathers so we created a stunning Oak and Cedar pavilion which features a micro cement rendered garden chimney, an outdoor TV and a bespoke designer concrete kitchen from local artisans Da Vinci Designer Concrete who also created the planters, dining table and cantilevered fire table.
The new perennialist style borders feature some beautiful multi-stem Amelanchiers and a Acer Griseum. A matrix of Sesleria autumnalis is balanced with a colourful mix through the seasons including perennials such as Salvia, Sedum, Achillea, Nepeta and Stachys.
Whitefield
Norther Design Award 2022 winning garden for the residential landscape category. A striking industrial design for a modest urban garden design in Whitefield, Manchester. Featuring a substantial bespoke pavilion, a sheltered outdoor living room includes a cinema and a cosy space to dine and entertain. Bespoke play equipment and a contemporary play house with a secret slide improve the garden’s aesthetics and feature as an integral part of the structure, creating a stylish and fun space.
Crittal screens mirror the properties doors and interior creating a cohesive, inside-out space. A floating bench wraps around a feature wall to become an elevated board walk leading the eye to a beautiful Torc pot.
Industrial style swings, monkey bars, climbing wall and cargo net add to the fun element without detracting from the mood and aesthetic.
The stunning steel and timber pavilion was selected as a finalist in the 2022 Pro Landscaper Awards for special feature and the garden won the prestigious Northern Design Awards 2022 for residential landscape.
Bowden
A luxury rental, new-build property was created for the high-end/footballers market in Bowden. The client, a renowned property developer in the North West approached us to create a striking contemporary garden design in Altrincham to compliment the properties exterior and luxury interior design. The concept needed to be low-maintenance but high impact with a “wow factor”. A dining terrace and a sheltered outdoor living room for entertaining and modern outdoor living was required and in the from ample room for parking.
Designed for minimal work and maximum pleasure, the minimalist, contemporary garden features a stunning pavilion with an outdoor chimney/fire place, built using the same materials as the house to create continuity and cohesion. It also features a large dining terrace all using a beautiful large format porcelain tile from CTC in Altrincham.
Bespoke concrete benches were commissioned and created for us by an amazing local artisan, Da Vinci Designer Concrete with contrast beautifully with the surrounding plants and gravel surface.. The planting is wild and naturalistic using lots of ornamental grasses, perennials and multi-stem trees which create the most relaxing and coolest vibe to this fabulous Bowden garden which looks stunning at night under the atmospheric mood lighting. Privacy was a key concern with the space as there are a number of other properties surrounding it and an ugly building to the rear so we used 8m high bamboo to create a contemporary screen.
