CREATING A DESTINATION
The owners of this garden in Woodford, Cheshire, wanted to create a garden retreat as a destination point . Their extensive garden was mainly lawn and deep shrub borders but they rarely had reason to venture to the far end of the garden. They decided to install a garden retreat as place to relax in the garden, entertain guests and as an occasional office. They called upon Matt Nichol Garden Design to help them achieve their vision. DESIGN REPSONSE Matt helped the clients to select a bespoke garden retreat by Tunstall Garden Buildings. The western red cedar cladding will soften with time to a silvery colour. The garden retreat was "settled" into the garden with a mixed planting scheme of shrubs, grasses and herbaceous plants, selected to create a natural and relaxed atmosphere. The soft rustling of the Golden Oats grass, Stipa gigantea, teamed with the tall purple Verbena bonariensis provides a winning combination. A water feature was created with a Lily Bowl planter by Urbis. The concentric circles of brick detail, gravel and thyme create the illusion of ripples on a lake. The garden retreat was linked back to the house by an informal winding path through longer grass and apple trees. The garden was installed in 2013 by Creative Gardens and Driveways, and these images were taken 8 months later in July 2014. This illustrates how quickly a garden can become established and with time the planting will fill out the borders further.
NEW COUNTRY GARDEN
This new country garden design was commissioned as a blank canvas project for a new build country house. The original house on this 2 acre (8000m2) site was demolished and the existing garden, which had been neglected for many years, was removed leaving only mature trees, a handful of valuable specimen shubs and the boundary hedging. The scope of brief was wide ranging and enabled us to explore a series of interconnecting gardens each with their own feel and characteristics. The overriding desire was to create a country garden which had a traditional, classical feel to it. - See more at: http://www.mngardendesign.co.uk/index.php/large-traditional-garden/#sthash.FnYjt3Z7.dpuf
FAMILY SIMPLICITY
This was a great opportunity to develop a versatile space for our client. They wanted a low maintenance garden which still provided interest and structure in the planting palette throughout the year. The garden looks fantastic as a just finished project, but will look even better as it develops over the years to come!
