Testimonials
BALI Award Winner 2020
read more"We had wanted to transform our garden for several years but had found it difficult to put our ideas together in a coherent way and also lacked the detailed plant knowledge. James was able to create a design that linked the house, the enlarged terrace and the garden together perfectly. We are delighted at how the garden has matured and how its character changes with the seasons."

SGD Finalist 2017
read more"James and the team really listened to us and how we wanted to use our garden. We are delighted with the finished result and even though the planting is less than a year old it looks amazingly mature. The colour palette used in the borders is stunning. We would definitely work with James and his team again on future projects. "

Projects
Modern Sanctuary
This was a new-build property, with fairly bland landscaping. The brief was to turn this 'blank canvas' into a family haven with a warm feel. Strong underlying geometry reflects the modern house, while the planting/materials were chosen to soften the effect. The front garden offers a calm welcome and at the back, a sandstone terrace flows from the kitchen and clay pavers lead to the fire-pit. Along with multi-layered planting, several additional features include a larger porch and bespoke greenhouse. The project won a BALI Special Award in 2022.
Elegant Edwardian Garden (BALI Award Winner)
The brief was to create a garden for an Edwardian property in a 1-acre plot. One key challenge was that the rear garden sloped away from the house steeply. We enlarged the terrace with defined dining areas along with more intimate spaces, adding a natural pond for interest and biodiversity. Steps now lead to an upper, more 'naturalistic' garden and through a new walkway to a gazebo. At the front, elegant iron railings have replaced the front wall, doorsteps were replaced with sawn stone steps and foundation planting added.
Contemporary Rear Garden (SGD Finalist)
Our client wanted us to create a contemporary oasis in the heart of the Garden Suburb. Sensitivity was needed as the plans required approval by the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust. A high proportion of planting to hardscaping was used to create a truly "gardenesque" feel whilst still allowing several different dining, seating and entertaining areas softened with greenery.
Modern Family Garden (SGD Finalist)
Our clients had a mature garden with some existing hedging and lovely specimen shrubs and trees. The garden is situated in Kings Langley in Hertfordshire, near Watford and Hemel Hempstead. The clients enjoyed their existing garden but found it rather disjointed and lacking an entertainment area and further areas of interest with their own identity. Our clients wanted a large terrace, swimming pool, pool house and an area where they could enjoy Japanese style plants. Our solution was to design a garden with a large terrace, swimming pool and pool house outside of the main living room which was very sunny. This area was suitable for Mediterranean style plants and included some large old olive trees. From this area, steps lead to a long access the length of the 2-acre garden. Along the access you can wander over a granite bridge in the Japanese garden and continue along an avenue of Malus Evereste planted in longer grass with wildflowers. Eventually you arrive at a bespoke green oak garden building from which you can access the woodland garden or simply enjoy the Hertfordshire views!
The Barn Garden (BALI Award Winner)
Our clients asked us to design their 1 acre garden set in a beautiful location on the top of the Chilterns, near Tring in Herts. The garden design needed to sit comfortably in a farmland setting yet have a contemporary feel . Being keen cooks our clients also required a small kitchen garden as well as a larger vegetable garden and orchard. A strong rectilinear geometry was used to connect the house to the garden and create spaces. Trees and clipped hedges were used to strengthen the geometry before the areas were over layered with a more naturalistic planting. A large area was given over to meadow using local native wildflower species to increase the biodiversity. Mown paths add an edge of control. An added touch was the use of bespoke sculpture to lead the eye and frame views.
