Are your employees fit to drive?

24 Apr 2025 | Technical News

Driving for Better Business (DfBB), an initiative aimed at making driving for business safer, is asking those who manage drivers to focus on fitness to drive.

Be it fatigue, intoxication, or ill-health, DfBB says that a lack of fitness when driving is at the root of most crashes.

Specifically, employers are being encouraged to:

  • Ensure they have the right policies in place to help manage their drivers’ fitness to drive, for which templates are available.
  • Check all involved, including managers, supervisors, and drivers themselves, are aware of their responsibilities.
  • Challenge drivers on their fitness to drive where necessary and raise any concerns with them.

As well as the policy templates, DfBB has created a range of other free resources to help business improve drivers’ fitness to drive.

These resources include an article to share with drivers, short messages for devices, and posters for staff noticeboards as well as information sheets from the van driver toolkit.

DfBB has also partnered with law firm Woodfines LLP to set out practical steps to help support compliance such as pre-employment checks and keeping medical information up to date.
