ATM enhance historic Engine Pit Waggonway
Accredited Contactor, ATM recently had the unique opportunity to enhance a historical site. The team at ATM were very pleased when they were asked to help clear vegetation and create easier access for pedestrians to the historic Engine Pit Waggonway, they jumped at the opportunity and were very pleased with the result.
Jenny Tindale, Deputy Clerk at East Bedlington Parish Council said:
“On behalf of the Parish Council please accept our sincere appreciation for the work you have undertaken. This has really made a huge difference to the outlook in the woods. The Friends of Furnace Bank community group is equally delighted and hopefully, this gesture will encourage more residents to become involved in promoting, preserving, and protecting our natural environment.”
The Waggonway was built in 1819 to transport coal from the Engine Pit, near Choppington, to coal staithes on the river Blyth, 30m south of this entrance. It was the first use of the revolutionary new 'malleable' iron rails, forged at the nearby Bedlington Ironworks.
Here is the site before and after the work was completed.
