Bedding display commemorating end of World War One
Green space management company, idverde, was honoured to once again work in partnership with its client Colchester Borough Council to create a stunning three-dimensional bedding display in Colchester’s Castle Park.
The display features willow sculptures and a floral World War One tank and incorporates over 11,000 plants. It commemorates the centenary of the end of World War One, as well as the town’s important role during the conflict, when up to 20,000 soldiers were stationed in the town, and the 1,263 men from the borough who sadly lost their lives.
The bedding display at the entrance to the park has become a local landmark, with the Council and idverde working together to produce a different design each year.
Last year’s display commemorated 125 years of the park and those who have maintained it over the years, and in 2016 a design featuring 3-dimensional bees was created.
As in previous years, the display was designed by Colchester Borough Council and idverde, who also helped build it and provided free compost.
Cllr Tina Bourne, Colchester Council Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities, said: “The First World War is an incredibly significant and defining moment in our history. This stunning and evocative flower display will help us remember and give thanks to all those who fought and died for our freedom on the battlefields of Europe a century ago.”
Martin Packman, idverde Regional Operational Director, said: “Our staff enjoy working in partnership with Colchester Borough Council to design and build Castle Park’s prestigious bedding display each year. This year’s display is particularly poignant and we are extremely proud to have been involved and to be able to honour our fallen heroes.”
