CRD hints at Glyphosate licence extension

25 Nov 2020 | Technical News

Whilst much of the European Union (EU) legislative framework will be adopted by Great Britain when the transition period comes to an end on 31st December 2020, pesticide regulation is one of the regulations where Great Britain may chose to adopt a different approach to the EU from relatively early on.

During a recent agriculture industry event, a representative for the Chemical Regulation Division (CRD) advised all active substances due to expire between 1st January 2021 and 31st December 2023 would be granted a 3-year extension as part of GB-specific regulations. Glyphosate is likely to be included in this extension, meaning its use in Great Britain may be extended from December 2022 until December 2025.

Whilst the CRD are at liberty to review the extension at any time, the extension until December 2025 seems likely.

Please note: Whilst the CRD remains the national regulator for the UK, the extension to Glyphosate licensing will not apply to Northern Ireland, who will continue to be bound by EU plant protection product regulations.
