Driving for Better Business initiative adds further resources

24 Jul 2024 | Technical News

Members may recall that, during 2021, the Association became a Strategic Partner with Driving for Better Business (DfBB), a Government-backed National Highways programme helping employers reduce work related road risk.

Leaders of the DfBB initiative invited the Association to become strategic partners due to the landscape industry's reliance on light commercial vehicles for operations - as well as their poor track record during road-side checks.

Campaigns led by National Highways which targeted commercial vans revealed the following trends:

- Two thirds of vans stopped at the roadside by the DVSA have a serious mechanical defect
- 40% of vans are prohibited from continuing their journey during roadside checks.
- Half of all new vans fail their MOT at first attempt

The Association recognises its role as an influencer of businesses who must manage work-related driving, and this partnership with Driving for Better Business represents a commitment to sharing resources, expertise, support and thought leadership and the promotion of the values of the Driving for Better Business programme within the landscape sector.

Recently the DfBB initiative launched a suite of additional resources, including employee driving for work policy builder tool, resource library, van driver toolkit and safety updates. The employee driving for work policy tool is worthy of particular attention, as it allows employers to outline the standard and behaviour expected from staff responsible for driving company vehicles. This may be in relation to:

Driver  Vehicle

- Non-compliance
- Policy monitoring
- Driving licence checks
- Fitness to drive
- Impairment (drugs/alcohol)
- Driver competence

- Roadworthiness
- Safe loads
- Security
- Engine idling
- Towing

All resources are free from the DfBB website; see link below for more details:
