Glyphosate approval extended by one year

03 Apr 2025 | Technical News

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has extended the current approval of glyphosate in Great Britain until 15 December 2026 while it carries out a full renewal assessment.

Glyphosate approval had been due to expire at the end of 2025, but the regulator says it needs more time to assess the herbicide’s longer-term future.

A group of companies, known as the Glyphosate Renewal Group, has applied for a renewal of the approval and submitted a dossier of evidence in support.

HSE says it will now consider the latest evidence in the round to determine whether glyphosate still meets the legislative criteria for approval.

The regulator will also consider the recent European Union assessment of the evidence, which led to the bloc – and Northern Ireland – approving the herbicide until 2033.

If the application is successful, the approval of glyphosate could be renewed for up to 15 years, though HSE would then have to assess all products containing the herbicide too.

If unsuccessful, the regulator would determine whether a more restrictive approach to approval meets the legal criteria, before resorting to non-renewal and phasing out of products.

BALI knows that this herbicide is a key tool for many landscaping businesses and we will continue to pay close attention to the approval process and help shape it where we can.
