Homes and Gardens Design Award for James Scott at The Garden Company
Accredited Designer, James Scott (FSGD MBALI) has been awarded a distinguished Design Award by Homes and Gardens for Best Small Garden 2023. The Homes & Gardens Design Awards focus on recognising excellence and celebrating the very best in design and decoration. The judging panel was looking for ‘standout design and excellent style from around the world, in order to showcase industry leaders’.
James commented:
“We are absolutely delighted that Homes and Gardens has recognised our design capabilities with this Award. At The Garden Company, we believe in the transformative quality of great garden design. We constantly seek to bring enduring value to our client’s lives through the creation of unique outside spaces".
The winning project in Bedfordshire transformed a ‘blank canvas’ into a warm, naturalistic space for the homeowners to spend time outdoors, relaxing with family and entertaining friends. The family had moved into a modern new property in a natural setting, adjacent to older properties with more character. The rear garden had a small patio and no planting; the awkwardly-shaped front garden had a low-quality drive, lawn and paved pathway. The front garden now offers a sense of calm welcome, with fluid organic shapes and various uses of rock, while the rear garden reflects the modern building through strong geometry. Intricately layered planting softens the overall effect. Strengthening the home’s connection to the rear garden was vitally important, as was paying homage to the Victorian brick wall along the back border and the holly hedge running the full length of the plot from front to rear. Over time, bespoke features including a larger porch, a handcrafted greenhouse and a water feature have enhanced the space further.
James and his team at The Garden Company had already received a National Landscape Awards Special Award for Best Design-and-Build project for this garden in 2022.
