Hospital roof garden has a green outlook
St George’s Hospital in South West London has a hidden oasis of green on the second floor of the Atkinson Morley Wing, adjacent to the McKissock Neurosurgery Ward. The gardens were commissioned by famous brain surgeon Henry Marsh to help with patient recovery, however following Henry’s retirement in 2015 the gardens were in need of some TLC. With the agreement of the hospital, The John King Brain Tumour Foundation has adopted the garden and, thanks to a team of friends and charitable donations, they are being maintained for the benefit of patients, visitors and staff.
The John King Brain Tumour Foundation was established by Laura King, whose husband (John) was diagnosed with a brain tumour and received treatment in 2015. Laura noticed the garden during John’s treatment and set about helping to transform the space after seeing for herself the benefits that the garden had on patient’s recovery.
Helping the Foundation in the revival of the garden is RHS Gold medal winning Garden Designer Tony Woods, and Landscape company ‘Garden Club London Ltd’. All are passionate about improving and developing the roof garden. The foundation would like to thank the generous sponsors who helped realise the design which included shaded pergolas by Forest Garden Products, planters from Adezz Garden Products, and an artificial lawn from Namgrass which are just a few of the highlights from the new-look garden. Garden Club London sponsored the design, installation and ongoing upkeep, including further planting of the area. The Foundation are delighted to announce that the garden is now open for patients, families and visitors to enjoy and help speed recovery.
