London Stone announces it is now carbon neutral

Accredited Supplier, London Stone, has announced they have achieved carbon neutrality. This announcement sets a new standard for the landscape industry and highlights the company's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

By going carbon neutral, London Stone has taken significant steps to reduce its impact on the environment. The company has implemented a range of initiatives to minimize its carbon emissions, including investing in renewable energy, reducing waste, and using sustainable transportation methods.

Following COP26 in 2021, London Stone directors decided to take matters into their own hands and not only commit to reducing their carbon emissions but use their influence to pave the way for their industry.

London Stone Co-founder and Fulfilment Director, Gavin Walley undertook various courses to gain a deeper understanding of how emissions are quantified, verified and reported. The courses included information concerning Environmental Management Systems, Greenhouse Gas Inventories and Measuring Carbon Footprint.

Gavin Walley said of the decision to make the company carbon neutral:

“Like so many people in our industry, a love of the outdoors attracted me to landscaping in the first place. The thought of leaving the planet in a worse shape than when we inherited it, with fewer sanctuaries and less habitat for wildlife, is unthinkable".

We have a duty to slow and ultimately reverse the environmental destruction that humans have inflicted so that future generations can enjoy the natural world as much as we have. The biggest threat right now is carbon emissions, so that’s why reducing our carbon footprint is our number one priority.

London Stone has achieved carbon neutrality in a number of ways.  Working with Carbon Footprint Ltd, the company initially underwent a self-imposed carbon emissions audit.  This process identified areas for improvement, which were then rectified, and resulted in the company running as sustainably as possible.

The audit also highlighted areas where some carbon emissions are unavoidable; sea freight and haulage for example, therefore as these emissions cannot be eradicated, they are balanced out through investment in carbon offsetting projects, making all London Stone products and materials carbon neutral.

The Carbon Footprint awarded London Stone their Carbon Neutral status in 2023. By continuing to work with them, London Stone can monitor their emissions, and update their offsetting investments accordingly, thereby safeguarding their carbon-neutral commitment.

Carbon offsetting works by balancing out emissions through financially supporting environmental projects around the world that help mitigate climate change.

Many of these projects also bring additional advantages to the communities in which they are based.  London Stone is supporting multiple carbon offsetting projects in India, where much of their natural stone is sourced, to complement their existing corporate social responsibility programmes.

London Stone has committed to a year-on-year reduction in its carbon footprint and are using offsetting as a tool whilst waiting for technological advancement, and government infrastructure support, that will further enable emission reductions in areas such as shipping and haulage.

As a family-run business for over 15 years, with their product regularly gracing Chelsea Flower Show’s main avenue, London Stone has built a solid reputation amongst their peers in the landscaping industry, as well as their customers, trade and consumer alike.  They want to put that influence to good use.
