22 Apr 2020 | BALI Member News

BALI Registered Affiliate member Wyevale Nurseries’ new cold store facilities have allowed the company to extend its bare root hedging and forestry transplant supply season to assist customers seeking supplies (April, 2020).

Its recently doubled cold storage capacity means that although the final date for lifting bare root hedging and forestry transplants was March 31 the stock will be prime for despatch throughout April into mid-May.

Carol Dickinson, Head of Business Support at Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford, which celebrates its 90thAnniversary this year, said:

“We now have 3,000 cubic metres of cold store space to help extend our supply season, which is highly beneficial to our customers, who may be behind with the season due to the very wet spring and subsequent Coronavirus outbreak.

“The new cold store facilities are heavily stocked with hedging and forestry transplants waiting to go out to customers who require them, and we have a huge range of varieties and sizes of hedging and forestry available right now.

“Coronavirus also bought about a very abrupt end to our root ball tree lifting. Work efforts had to be quickly shifted into production and we have a full range of container grown trees ready and waiting to go. Please contact us to find out more via enquiries@wyevale-nurseries.co.uk.”

Wyevale Nurseries, which is one of the UK’s leading commercial nurseries, invested in its new market-leading transplant facility in response to increasing demand for British-grown native trees and transplants. 80% of itstransplants are now British sown and British grown.

Carol added:

“Planting ‘British sown, British grown’ will massively reduce the risks to our biosecurity. Pests and disease control is a high priority on site at Ledbury and we encourage clients to come and see before they buy. We are extremely proud of our P & D control programs and welcome the new government strong guidelines on plant passporting and traceability.

“We would ask all plant users to understand and comply with the guidelines, the health of all plants being planted in the UK should be a consideration for everyone.

“UK horticulture employs in the region of 100,000 permanent and seasonal workers every year so buying ‘British sown, British grown’ continues to support this industry.

“Sourcing British sown, British grown plants has never been more important. By doing so you are not only giving your plants the best opportunity to thrive, but you are also helping protect our environment and supporting our economy for generations to come.”

Wyevale Nurseries specialise in ‘British sown, British grown’ transplants, with a full range of native broadleaf varieties. A large proportion of its transplant stock is seed raised and then grown and cared for at its Ledbury site.

The soil at this site is a sandy loam, perfect for producing fibrous root systems which will boost the plants nutrient take up and promote strong, vigorous growth.

Wyevale Nurseries is also an approved member of the UK Sourced & Grown Assurance Scheme (UKSG). A scheme organised by the Woodland Trust and Grown in Britain.

The scheme guarantees buyers that trees in its stock marked with the UKSG badge are raised from seeds sourced only from the UK and grown in the UK for their entire lifespan.

Carol continued:

“Being part of the scheme allows our customers to come to us and source full traceable UK provenance stock. This is particularly important in not only sustaining our own business but reducing the requirements for imports, by creating more demand for UK provenance stock.”

The product selection available from Wyevale Nurseries is envied across the industry and the talented team regularly introduces new, award-winning plant varieties.

Its main business is to supply garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.
